Teammates
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.”
Sports bring out the best and worst sides of people. The heat of competition often forges a powerful bond of friendship with our teammates that lasts a lifetime. However, the intensity of sport can also distort our view of those same people that we share a locker room with.
As athletes pursue excellence and compete for playing time and podium spots we can be tempted to view our teammates negatively. As frustration rises, jealousy creeps in, and the slightest amount of trash talk sets us off.
The reality is that our teammates are not perfect. They will make mistakes on and off the field, pool, or track. Because they are human.
The words of Jesus are a refreshing reminder. “Love your neighbor as yourself”. It is these words that lay the foundation for the “Golden Rule”. This reminder that we are to treat others as we would want to be treated. So I ask, how would you want to be treated as a teammate?
We are called to love and respect our teammates because Jesus commands us too. Not because they are worthy, or deserve it, but, precisely, because they are not, and we are not. When all is said and done, you will likely forget many of the plays you made and the ones you didn’t. But you will remember your teammates, and they will remember you. What will they say about you?
You have an incredible opportunity during your years of competition to build deep and meaningful friendships that encourage and point others to the Lord. I challenge you to extend love, grace, kindness, patience, and forgiveness to your teammates. They are the same things the Lord extends to us.
